Busi pada sistem pengapian berfungsi sebagai alat untuk memercikan api listrik guna membakar campuran gas pada ruang bakar. Percikan api listrik ini diperoleh dari tegangan tinggi yang dihasilkan oleh ignition coil.

Dalam hal perambatan panas busi dapat dibagi-bagi menjadi beberapa tipe yaitu :
a. Busi tipe panas
Busi ini sukar merambatkan panas hasil pembakarannya keluar dari elektrodanya sehingga elektrodanya selalu panas.
b. Busi tipe sedang
Busi ini dapat merambatkan panasnya keluar dari elektrodanya dengan normal.
c. Busi tipe dingin
Busi ini mudah merambatkan panas asil pembakarannya keluar dari elektrodanya sehingga elektrodanya selalu dingin.

Busi dingin mempunyai ciri porselin yang membungkus elektrodanya sangat tipis dan sebaliknya busi panas mempunyai pembungkus elektrodanya yang tebal.

Busi dingin biasanya dipakai pada mesin-mesin tipe panas, sedangkan busi panas dipakai pada mesin-mesin tipe dingin. Angka yang ditunjukkan pada busi biasanya menerangkan daya rambat panas keluar dari busi dimana bila angka membesar berarti daya rambat panas keluar juga besar atau sebaliknya.

Ukuran celah busi (spark plug gap) untuk kendaraan Toyota adalah 0,8 s/d 0,9 mm. Ukuran ini dimaksudkan agar percikan api dapat berlangsung dengan sempurna.
